Auto Trans/Rig Help....w/pics now

I'm sitting here at a kinkos. I was just over a guys house, thinking of buying his jeep, a real steal - but here's the issue. it won't idle at all below, say, 1300 rpm, and even at higher rpm (1300+), the SECOND you put the auto trans into gear, the thing dies. my question is: is this a trans problem? if i crank the idle up to around 1200-1300 it will run fine, indefinetly, but the second you put the trans in gear or lower the idle, it dies out.

Please help me here in the next few minutes, as i'm paying to use this computer!

thanks,
pablo

1. Nope, it's a fuel injection/emissions problem.
2. The tranny's likely fine.

I note you have over 600 posts - many, many more than me... and yet you want a second opinion to 'The LEVE'?
Surely you jest!

[/ QUOTE ]1. Nice piece of information.
2. The AT in a Jeep,
3. Has no effect on vacuum,
4. Such as a Vacuum modulator, etc.
5. What it does have is an effect on load.
6. When dropped into gear,
7. Load is increased,
8. The Carb can't keep up...
9. And the engine dies.
10. This is a BBD carb?
11. If so...
12. The carb needs replacement/rebuild/swap.
13. It's the basic BBD Carb problem.

Is there any possibility it's a torque converter issue? That was the first thing I thought.

1. It's possible, but not probable.
2. The key's </font><blockquote><font class="small">In reply to:</font><hr />

3. Then there might be a vacuum problem.
4. Cover the Carb Throat and see if it still runs...
5. With the AT in neutral.
6. If it does, there's a vacuum leak.

Re: Auto Trans/Rig Help...in next 10 minutes - urgent!

Ok so you want a 2nd opinion,,
What LEVE said is right,,,,
You drove it to where you are right?
Well the only way the tranny would kill the motor on its own is if it were locked up,,, again you drove it to where you are right?

You either have a terrible vauum leak or a bad carb either on is easy fix.

Re: Auto Trans/Rig Help...in next 10 minutes - urgent!

I don't think he drove the jeep since it would die when it gets into gear. Can you put it in nuteral and push it around? That would tell you if the trans is completely locked up. If it needs a ride home on a trailer i go out of town pretty much for the summer tomorow at 7. I might be able to haul it for you tonight or tomorow but time is short. Give me a call and i'll see what i can do.
