Wipers acting weird

Hey all,

Got a '91 YJ

Today the wipers started acting funny. They work in high, do not work in low or intermediate and sometimes work when I spray windshield fluid.

Anyone know if this is one of those linkage problems (I found several posts on it), or is this a weird electrical problem?

I would guess that you have an electrical problem.
Could be the contact points that control the speed. But I don't know where they are exactly.
There is also a harness above your knees that the wires for the wipers go thru. It may have come loose on one side. I knocked mine apart before when I was working under the dash.

theres a good chance that the intermittent module is bad. you can reach up under the dash and remove it. the harness will plug right back together without it. if your problems stop, you'll know that was the culprit. when they go bad, they can do all kinds of weird stuff. my wifes cherokee's wipers would turn on by themselves when the switch was off, and you couldn't shut them off.

Re: Wipers acting weird

Thanks guys.

I now think it is electrical too. When the wipers DON'T work when I try using fluid, the fluid pump does NOT come on either. So pushing the wiper fluid "tab" forward on the stem is not completing the circuit or something like that.

Time to go in and root around.

It was so great that this happened today, it was 35 and it snowed, so the roads were nice and wet and dirty.

I'm not sure on your wiper motor ..but what often leads you to believe its an electrical problem is one with the motor itself. Mine (beater 91 Taurus) wouldn't auto cancell ..nor would it work on the lower intermittent settings ...and only one of the higher speeds. It was the wiper motor itself ..although all indications pointed to a switch problem.

The washer not working would sorta lead you toward a switch problem ..but I'd grab a meter and pull the connector at the wiper motor and check it out before I start digging too far.

Re: Wipers acting weird

Just an update for kicks.

When I first turn on the jeep from a cold start, the wipers work on high, and the fluid pump works too. Eventually, the pump quits working and eventually the wipers on high stop working. Then the wipers on high start and stop working at random intervals.

When I turn on the warmed up Jeep, the fluid pump doesn't work and the wipers on high work randomly.

Low and intermittent pretty much never work. I think I saw one or two brief swipes of the wipers on intermittent in the last 3 days.

Re: Wipers acting weird

1. Check the washer motor connector...
2. It may be corroded.
3. Check your grounds...
4. That's the first place to go...
5. Remember the windshield wiper motor,
6. Is trying to ground through the windshield frame.
7. That's not always (translated to almost never) a good ground....

Re: Wipers acting weird

Thanks LEVE.

The windshield frame is rusting away in the front, so it might very well be a ground issue. I got a new frame painted and ready for glass. It will be installed one of these days...

Re: Wipers acting weird

Anybody happen to know where the washer fluid pump is in a YJ? How do you get to it?

On the CJ it is on the bottom of the fluid container. Is it not there on the YJ?
