O/T Anyone know Mercury Comet Cyclones?

About 5 years ago I went over to a friend's dad's house. He had a mid to late-sixties Mercury Comet Cyclone. I think it had a fiberglass hood, big V-8, and so on. But one thing I remembered about it was the removeable panel between the taillights. Driving around town you kept the panel on and the lettering said "Comet" or "Mercury" or something, so you could surprise your competition at the stoplights. But when you went to the strip, the panel popped off to reveal the "Cyclone" nameplate underneath. That way your opponents could see what they were up against. I am fairly certain that this was factory and not some modification. Does this sound familiar to any Mercury specialists out there? If so, what years was this done? Thanks.
