Re: CJ8 258 ENGINE SWAP

The 258 ceased to exist in '90. If you've found a good 4.0, go that route. I would try to get all the extras like wiring that I could up front. Even better if the fuel injection comes with it. I think the tranny should bolt up. You would need to get the exhaust manifold too.

Re: CJ8 258 ENGINE SWAP

If you're going for ease and speed, rebuild the 258 or find a good running replacement. If you're looking for an upgrade, then go 4.0. I've heard it bolts directly to your preexisting motor mounts. The wiring can be PITA though ... you'll either have to splice your 4.2 harness into the 4.0 harness or fork over some big $$$ to get wiring kit from someone like Hesco. Not really sure what tranny came in the CJ, but if at all possible you might want to get the AX15 that comes with the 4.0 and drop 'em both in ... then you'll have no worries about the compatibility of the tranny and engine. Do a search on this forum as well as pirate4x4.com ... I'm sure you'll find tons of info on this very swap.

Good luck
