360 Progress??? help w/timing and starter

OK, picked up the jeep from the exhaust shop today and ran it back over to do the final adjustments on the carb and timing and to change to oil.

this is a fresh rebuild 360 from a 78 waggy, .040 over, performer intake, q-jet backwards, and a comp cams RV torker cam 262 grind. it has about one hour run time on it.

anyway, sounded great for the drive back and ran ok, realized i had a little vacuum leak on the back of the carb which made it run a bit lean. everything ran ok for the ride back across town. get it into the shop, fix the vacuum leak and get ready to set the timing. while trying to start the jeep to set the timing realize the starter is about burned so it's time to get a new one - it drags and will not start when it is hot, but fires right up when cold, also does not always engage. anyway drain the oil, put int the mobil one and fire it up. we set the timing per specs that we could find at 10, but when we drove it up the street the valves were cahttering a bit on load so i figure its a bit too far advanced. at any rate if anyone has the proper settings for this motor or any ideas that would be great.

thanks,

Re: 360 Progress??? help w/timing and starter

Stock I think it is like 6-8 btdc. All the research I have pored over on the net says that with that intake and cam and such, 10 btdc is more like it.

Right now mine is sitting 15 btdc. I don't have brakes yet so I can't run it down the road to see if its too far advanced off idle, but at idle its great. (no starting issues, other than getting shocked by the key because it is wore out and shorting on itself...)

Thread hijack here-- Do you have any good shots of your q-jet?? I have a q-jet to put on my 304, but need a few pics to pore over for a while.

Re: 360 Progress??? help w/timing and starter

it is set at 10 right now and the vlaves are tapping under load, so i think i'll drop it to 7 and try until the engine loosens up a bit then i'll play with it. it's pretty tight right now with the rebuild.

i'll snap some pics of the q-jet for you this week and either email em to you, post em on my site or both.

i used the manifold i got from you (irjpr) and put a squarebore to spreadbore adapter on upside down (had to grind off one small piece on the side so the linkage would not get caught). then i just dropped it on backwards, fabbed a throttle cable bracket, fabbed a choke linkage and ran it. i got more than a few comments from my drag racing buddies who looked a few times at the carb and noted that "somthing aint right here". runs like a champ up the road, except like i said about the valve tapping, hopefully retarding it a bit will help that.

thanks,

Cool, I would be interested in pics. No big hurry, I have to take care of brakes first and then the carb/timing stuff is after that...
