how rare are d44\'s?

i am looking to buy a 98 or newer TJ and i have been holding out for a d44 rear axle. i have had no luck and am wondering what my odds are of actually finding one. any ideas of how common they are? i don't want to keep passing up these otherwise good deals if i am not going to be able to find one with a d44 anyway.

thanks all

Re: how rare are d44\'s?

i thought that the d44 was an option for all sports and sahara's (at least it is an option now). but every one i have looked at has had a d35 and the ones i have called about have abs, which i was told was only available with the d35.

thanks all

I guess that depends on what dealer you talk to. When I went to buy my tj I was planning to order one with basically what the wrangler X is now, and a 44 rear. They told me it was no longer an option. They had 2 yellow ones on the lot with basically every option for a reasonable amount more than I planned to spend, so I went ahead and bought one of them rather than wait. I later found out that was a lie, and was stuck with a d35.
So as for your odds of finding one, that just depends on how many people in your area bought a new jeep with intentions of using it and ordered a 44. If you find a really good deal, then why not just get it and use the money saved to pick up a 44? You can probably find one for $1000-1500, just figure that into your price.

Newer tj's if you ordered the 30" tire package you got the dana 44. I don't know what year that started on tough.

It was an option on the Sport and Sahara models. Not available on the X (at least for the 2002 model year). Starting in 2003 (I think) you got it if you ordered the 30" wheel and tire package. Not very common here in Indiana, (my salesman didn't even know what I was talking about) but I looked at several 2000 models at a dealer in Denver and most of them had the D44.
