O/T Help! 5.0 died (no spark)
OK here's the deal.. 1970 Ford with a 1987 5.0 and OD tranny from a Crown Vic.
Has run flawlessly since I did the swap more than two years ago. The other night it died while driving down the road. Stopped, fired back up. Took off, shifted into 2nd, died again. Hasn't started since. Here's what I've done: Checked for spark NONE, checked all engine, chassis battery grounds and positives. Checked all power/grounds for computer. All OK I do not have a multi meter. Checked for power to the coil and also power to the TFI module in run and start. OK. Couldn't find anything else to check without a meter so I threw a coil at it. Wasted $16.00 Any ideas? I've got the distributor out now and module removed. I see what looks like some melting at the bottom of the pickup coil (where the three prongs for the module plug in through the bottom of the dist). Any ideas of other things I can check without having to find the cash for a multi meter. I think the computer is OK, it still runs the fuel pump as it should. I'm sorta out of ideas and can use any help, suggestions, guesses, shots in the dark, etc. TIA |
Re: O/T Help! 5.0 died (no spark)
It sounds like the TFI module, or the computer power relay.
They are both cheep enough to buy swap and check, then keep as spares if they are not the problem. |
Re: O/T Help! 5.0 died (no spark)
After re-reading your post it is not the Computer power relay if the fuel pump is pressurizing at start up.
I would be willing to bet that its the TFI module. |
Re: O/T Help! 5.0 died (no spark)
Yup, lots of hard cash for a meter.
Home Depot, Walmart etc have el-cheapos for under $10. Harbor Freight has them on sale for $4.99. You could hsve had 3 for the price of that coil. |
Re: O/T Help! 5.0 died (no spark)
Yup TFI module did it. Thanks. Sorry RRich, but if I'm gonna buy a meter, I'm gonna do it right... but you do have a point, a cheapo would have worked for what I needed to test.

Re: O/T Help! 5.0 died (no spark)
I bought one of the ones that walmart carries for about $10. It has been plenty for me. My dad has a fluke but I don't notice any difference for the things I use one for. (automotive and house electrical)

Right awn!
A spare TFI is a good part to keep in your parts bag. They dont go out very often, but if they do let go, you arent going anywhere until you change it. I had a faulty MSD ignition a couple of years ago, that lunched a couple of my TFI's, until I diagnosed the cause. |
