77 CJ5 needs heelp with transfer case !!!

Need to consult the Jeep gurus on this one. I have a 77 CJ5 with a 304 and a Dana 300 transfer. The jeep will not move at all while in 2 high. It will move in 4H and 4L. Any ideas on where to start looking for a fix and how much $$ am I looking at
Thanks
Rob

This was swapped in? (Dana 20 was stock) Sounds like the shifter is not working correctly and in 2H is it staying in neutral. In 4L and 4H, can you unlock your hubs and still move or does just the front shaft spin?

Re: 77 CJ5 needs heelp with transfer case !!!

Midnight auto needed a rear drive shaft and your jeep fit the bill....

In all seriousness (sp) though, start with the utmost obvious.... and work up the list.

Do you have a full float kit with hubs int eh back?? Like will said does it drive in 4 hi with the front end unlocked??

Trouble shoot a few things and let us know what you find.

The Jeep will move if the front hubs are locked. If they are not locked the engine just revs when you put in gear and try to move

Get someone to watch the front driveshaft when you have the front hubs unlocked. I think you have narrowed down your problem to the shift rail for the rear output though. For some reason, only the front shift fork is moving, the rear one is stuck in neutral.

Block your wheels and put the transmission in neutral. Crawl underneath while an assistant moves the transfer case shifter forward/backward. I suspect that the driver's side shift rail is not moving. You will have to figure out why. Might be a good opportunity to convert to a twin stick shifter.

I checked out the trransfer case and the rear driveshaft moves when you oput it into 2H and 1st, Reverse, ect.. Could the problem be in the rear axle or Diff?

Yes, it could very well be a broken diff crosspin or spun hub.

Did you jack up the rear wheels off the ground to check it? If not, the tires are turning your driveshaft.

Re: 77 CJ5 needs heelp with transfer case !!!

Sounds like it's your rear end and not your t-case to me. I had a buddy who thought his clutch took a dump when it turned out to be just a spun rear hub, that was a big mistake that cost him a lot of $$. Check the obvious things first before tearing into the t-case. If you have 2 piece shafts it's probably them.

Block your front wheels.
Put your rear axle on jackstands.
Unlock your hubs.
Start engine and put in gear and 2H.
Does rear driveshaft turn?
Put in 4H.
Does rear driveshaft turn?
Put in 4L.
Does rear driveshaft turn?

I still think your shift rail for the rear output is stuck in neutral. I don't think you have axle problems.
