Is this steering shaft stock??
1 Attachment(s)
I have a *VERY* worn out u-joint on my steering shaft, but I'm having problems trying to decide what to buy..
I have no idea if this shaft is stock.. I don't beleive this steering column is from a cj, but actually out of a later model chevy w/ tilt.. When I bought the vehicle I remember they PO telling me that the steering box was from some old Nova.. Anyway here is the best pic I could get.. Does this look like a stock shaft? Can I just ask for the lower member of the steering shaft for an 83 CJ?? Thanks. http://tellico.off-road.com/wwwthrea...4-100_1480.JPG |

That looks like a stock shaft. It should have a rag joint at the column end.

Re: Is this steering shaft stock??
Leve, mabey it's just me, but I can't see anything in that pic that resembles a u-joint.. When I look at my shaft it has a distinct u-joint. Looks almost the same as a standard u-joint on a drive shaft.. Just I don't think this one comes apart.. It looks as if the entire joint, and shaft on either side is one assembly..
I have no idea what a rag joint is, but I was told by a buddy that that is not one.. Thanks.. |
Re: Is this steering shaft stock??
Now that I've thought about it a little longer, I remember the 70's chevy's having a joint like the lower CJ joint at the column end and a flat rag joint at the steering box end. I don't know what chevy did at the time that the truck in the picture you posted was made.

Re: Is this steering shaft stock??
My appologies on this.. I was rushing while reading this at work, and mis-read a couple lines..
Now that I have got home and re-read the posts, I realize what is actually being said here.. Sorry again.. And thanks for the help.. Justin.. BTW, is it just me or does the forum seem to be extremly slow today.. There just aren't too many new posts.. This last one on this thread was in the afternoon, and it's still sitting near the top.. I would generally expect to have to go back one or two pages to get anything that old... Thanks. |
