What is this part and what does it do ?????

I was recently building a new battery hold down bracket on my 84 CJ7 (258) when I noticed a component that I had not paid attention to before. Directly beneath the battery tray on the passenger side there is a black cylinder (estimate 4 inches by six inches tall) that has a hose coming out of it. (hose is not connected to anything). Couple of questions;

a). What is this thing and what does it do? (Important??)
b). Do I need to connect it? If so to what

Thanks for your input, sorry if this is a stupid question.

1. It's a Vacuum Reservoir canister..
2. What year CJ do you have?
3. Did it look like this?

Sounds like your heater blower motor and the drain for the air vents. There should be a brown wire hooked to the "cylinder" too.

It is an 84 CJ7. I thought the vapor canister was on the drivers side near/below the brake master cylinder. Are there two such canisters?

No its not the blower motor, it is mounted more on the fender well and not on the firewall.

Huh? The blower motor is mounted inside and sticks through the firewall.

Re: What is this part and what does it do ?????

Will, thanks for the links, I have in fact done the blower upgrade and the canister that I am referring to is not associated with heating. It is located more on the side and not the firewall. I am going to try and post a photo.

Thanks.

That's a vacuum reservoir canister, should connect somewhere to the vacuum system.
