OT: Spammer ripped-off my e-mail address....

Yesterday SPAM hit an all time low at my house. I have received spam for years and I have had many e-mail address that I switch around to minimize the flow into my inbox. This has been somewhat inconvenient, but tolerable. Yesterday I checked my mail and found that the master acount from my ISP had been hijacked. My outlook inbox began filling quickly with 100s of messages. I stopped downloading them and went directly to my ISP mailbox. There were over 7000 messages. Most of them were bounces from undeliverable addresses but some were actual replies from unhappy spam victims. The sad thing is tha once my e-mail box hits 20megs it starts bouncing messages back to the undliverable addresses which bounce back to my inbox which causes a never ending e-mail loop. What a waste of resources. To top it all off the message that was sent wasn't an ad for penis enlargement, or some porn site. It just had the subject "I F.-.c.k yor mother he-he" and the text "heh ) " Who the hell is wasting time with crap like this sending it to thousands of people? I can't believe the waste of resources. By the way, my address has been quickly blocked by most servers, and is now useless. Thank you spammers.

Re: OT: Spammer ripped-off my e-mail address....

Watch yourself.

And I pray you have a Anti-Virus running.

For the past 4 weeks or so the return mail servers have been on the fritz around here, everytime someone sends mail and it gets returned, they dish it out to all the accounts wiht a virus in it.

I'm used to getting 400-500 emails a day now.. I've got it setup to filter all the shyte out automatically. it does a pretty good job of it. But also, I get emails that I didn't send returned to me.. so now I get a peek into everyones private lives. :-/

Re: OT: Spammer ripped-off my e-mail address....

Sorry to hear that Tom. I hate spam and I am really sick of the offensive nature of most of the e-mails. Heck, even JeepChic gets the penis enlargement e-mail.

What really makes me mad is that I have two e-mail accounts. A work address and a hotmail address. I always try to use the hotmail address when I have to type one in on a web page. Unfortuantly, e-bay won't allow that adress and I think that is where the spamers have gotten my work address. I now get more spam on my work e-mail than on hotmail!

With that said, how can I configure microsoft outlook to filter out spam? I really don't want any of their services!

Re: OT: Spammer ripped-off my e-mail address....

You wonder about the advertisers - do they think anybody in their right mind would order something from them when they act like that? They gotta be nuts themselves!
Whenever I get unsolicited emails, pop-ups, or other junk advertising I try to remember them - even if they are major places or things, I won't buy them - ever.
That includes Nissan - I've been getting their garbage lately.
As far as the viruses go and the stealing of addresses, identity etc I think a bullet in the back of the head is too soft on them. Death by slow torture is more fitting.

We certainly don't need those people in society.

Re: OT: Spammer ripped-off my e-mail address....

By the way - the "DO NOT CALL List" - has anyone experienced what I have - ever since I signed up on it I've been deluged with the crank telemarketing calls - maybe 4 or 5 times as many as before.
Seems like the telemarkers have been given a new list of people to harass by them. It's working just the opposite of what was promised.

Has anyone been prosecuted yet?

Sure feels like another government scam.

1. No...
2. The telemarketing calls have ceased!
3. What a blessing.

Re: OT: Spammer ripped-off my e-mail address....

I hate to say it, but I think instead of a Spammer getting a hold of your email address, that has all the symptoms of a computer with a virus infection. Similar to other viruses... it is possible the virus stole your email address from the infected machine, then mailed itself to other computers, often spoofing the "from field" using your address.

To be honest, I think these people need to find a hobby, or a girlfriend. Something to take up their time other than this.

Re: OT: Spammer ripped-off my e-mail address....

I agree Sean...sounds like a bug! Most of the latest junk unpacks it's very own SMTP server (sends infected email whether you have an account or email client loaded). After the last round of MyDoom, the junk seems to have subsided, but there's *ALWAYS* another mass mailing bug ready to hit the streets.

Re: OT: Spammer ripped-off my e-mail address....

Well I doubt that it is a bug, but anything is possible these days. I run Spybot Ad software, and virusscan. All of the mail messages were sent from 01019freenet.de 66.168.221.154. This is a free internet service in Germany. Alot of the bounced messages were also in German. I would love to know if there is something that can be done, but I seriously doubt it. Let me know if you still think I am "bugged".

Here is one of the message headers:
"Received: from 01019freenet.de ([66.168.221.154] unverified) by everglades.hyper.com with Microsoft SMTPSVC(5.0.2195.6713);
