AMC 20 Axle/Hub

So I bought an axle kit from Quadratec. The axle has straight splines that go into the differential at one end and tapered splines that dig into a machined area in the hub???? Is that correct? There is a key and oh boy it's big. So is this right that the hub end of the axle does not mate with splines in the hub, just a smooth surface to dig into? Do I have a hub that didn't get splines cut into it?

You get to broch the splines into the hub as you put it together. That's the way the factory did it. Seems a bit crude doens't it.

Re: AMC 20 Axle/Hub

Pretty much stand on the end of a breaker bar then turn it to the next notch in the castle nut. Both Chilton and Haynes say 250 ft/lbs, the typical torque wrench goes to like 150 or maybe 200. Gude en tite for sure.

The shaft cuts its own splines into the hub as you tighten the nut. Some will probably post that 250 is just starting to get snug and more like 400 to seat it well.

Re: AMC 20 Axle/Hub

I have HEARD.. and it's been a long time since so I don't recall where I HEARD it, but when the axle shaft and hub are mated together they are also pressed on with about 20K# of pressure. easy to believe if you've ever pressed one off a shaft. It took all that a 20ton press had to press my old ones off.

Re: AMC 20 Axle/Hub

Personally, I would send it back and go with the solid axle. Money well spent...
