Battery retaining charge... what am I doing wrong?

Ok Guys, here's the situation. I have a 97 ZJ which is really starting to tick me off. We left for Massachusets last friday so my Jeep sat in the long term lot all weekend. We are in Wisconsin so it was pretty darn cold the whole time we were away. When I got back, my Jeep was dead as a doornail. Not a single ounce of juice left in the battery. I didn't leave anything on so what the heck caused it to drain so quickly? Three days without running really isn't enough to kill it is it? I had inclinations that perhaps the Alternator wasn't working right, but every time I start it up, the thing works just fine. It is only if it sits for an extended period of time.

Any ideas?

Thanks for your help,
Sean

Re: Battery retaining charge... what am I doing wrong?

Could be a defective battery - they do that.
Could be you have something on all the time - easy way to tell - disconnect either battery cable, connect a test light from the disconnected cable to the post it just came off. The light should NOT glow at all, of it does, something's still on. Then it's a case of finding what that is. Shield it from light to see closely, sometimes they barely glow.

If the test light's off, have the battery load tested. It may even pass the load test though if you have it charged again. Sometimes they'll test fine, but not hold a charge overnight or for a longer time. The only way then is replace it.
Like me, it may hate the cold.

If you go the way of getting a new Battery I would recomend a Red top, or yellow top. I could not be more pleased with mine.
