Re: 78 CJ fuel injection????

1. Do a EFI search on this forum!
2. There are several guys who've fuel injected I6's and V8's,
3. From Junkyard parts to Homemade controllers,
4. There are more options than you can shake a stick at...
5. Get a hold of Ken Gaines over on JU,
6. He's just finishing up his DIY Fuel Injection...
7. You can go simple, or elaborate,
8. It's your choice.
9. The 304/360 isn't limited either,
10. It's just a matter of getting the parts together,
11. And programming the ECM.
12. All things you can do,
13. With a little more knowledge..
14. A few parts,
15. And a lot of patience.
16. But it's worth it!
17. Payback will be very quick,
18. As your MPG will rise,
19. And the fuel system will be reliable.

Re: 78 CJ fuel injection????

If you're wanting to buy a system instead of build your own, I recommend John at Custom EFIs. The thing I like about his systems is they control the spark curve as well as fuel. Even if you decide to build one, it's a very good website to read for knowledge and has links to even more good sites.

I know other guys would recommend a Howell setup, and there's one or two who have completely built built their own systems! Like LEVE said, just do a search and you'll find writeups.

I've done quite a bit of tuning on my 304 EFI (from Custom EFIs). It's not perfect yet, but it runs so well that I don't mess with it all that often anymore. I'll be happy to share my tune with you if you decide you want to convert and get into burning your own chips, etc.

Good luck,

Clay

P.S. I decided to switch to EFI because I was tired of getting my butt kicked by carberators. No matter what I do, we just don't get along. I now have no cold start / running problems, no problems with stalling on hills, better gas mileage, and my horsepower is at least equal to what it was and I think is getting better as I tune. I've got my fuel pretty well setup now and I'm working on the spark curves.

I would definitely recommend fuel injection for anyone who hates carberators, or just likes being able to plug a laptop into your Jeep and see how it's running, then make changes to it with a few mouse clicks!

Re: 78 CJ fuel injection????

As mentioned before the Edelbrock system is not yet available. However, the guys over at IFSJA.ORG have done some homework and claim the starting price will be around $2800. Their sources seem to be very reliable.

Re: 78 CJ fuel injection????

There are a lot of good options. Throttle body and multipoint. The only one I've heard bad things about was the Holley throttle body system. Some can't get it to run right, and others have problems with short life of the TPS and parts replacement issues.

Throttle body is the least expensive way to go as you typically just ditch the carb and go with an adapter to the throttle body, as opposed to buying a new intake. Depends on your goals. Throttle body with a stock manifold will give you all the benefits of fuel injection, just not the same horsepower potential as a swap including the intake manifold. But to me, performance is part of an overall package, and unless you are willing to make many changes, the performance improvement of changing a single aspect would be disappointing in most cases, unless its a known bottleneck in the system.

Re: 78 CJ fuel injection????

I just got my junkyard TBI setup going the last few weeks. All the info is out there on the net, if that's the route you want to go.

I'm planning to do a full writeup w/ pics, someday. I couldn't get a camera while I was doing it, so I'll have to do a little teardown to get the shots I want.
