My son was just patented, and it was not cheap, but shouldn't cost more than $5-10k. All the costs are in attorney fees for research and such. I never did ask him what the actual cost was. His was in gold recovery.

Yup, expensive and not easy, and time consuming. I tried to patent a novel idea for a motorcycle alarm - cost was close to 10K, never got it either - it was too close to other patents. That 10K was for the attorney - I realized I was in the wrong business, should have been a patent atty.

Strange thing though - it's never been marketed.

Must be cold here - saw that atty the other day walking down the street - he had his hands in his own pockets!

Re: O/T obtaining a patent

I worked on getting a patent for a GPS based alarm system back in 1995. Cost was about 8-9k and that only brought us the the backround search for other patents and review of their specifics. Patenting can be very very expensive. Of course our product did get marketed some what. The difference in our product was that if your car was stolen it utilized a cell phone and called the nearest police station and gave voice information to the cops (re what street the vehicle was on... where it was headed, nearest cross street, info on the owner, car description, plates, and vin, etc...). Was pretty cool... I figure you could sell this today with new technology for 500-700.
