2001 4.0 alternator question
On the 01 model the voltage regulator is in the ECU. Could the oem alternator be made to work w/ an external voltage regulator of some kind or even used w/ the ECU somehow without using the ECU for anything else? Make since???? Trying to use a 01 4.0 in an 84 model cj. See previous post. Thanks
Re: 2001 4.0 alternator question
The original alternator could probably be made to work with an external regulator, but it would be a Science Fair project. It might even have the connections inside to mount an internal regulator. Open it up ahd have a look. Otherwise I'd use a junkyard alternator; they're not expensive.
I sure wouldn't try to get the ECU to regulate the alternator; that's just a bunch of stuff to cause trouble, and there's nothing to gain by it.
