258 Engine ID

I'm trying to identify what year the engine in my jeep is. I don't beleive that it is the original engine. The jeep is a '90 YJ with the 258. The casting on the passenger side of the block is 80L28. Does anyone know what year my engine is. If you have and '87 - '90 258, what is your engine id #. This may help to determine what year mine is.

Re: 258 Engine ID

My 87 has 605C12, meaning it's a 258 made May 12, 1986. If it's an older motor, there's a digit missing between the 0 and the L. If there's another number there it will give the month made. The number you show looks like a 1966 232ci. The L is what seems strange. Look for some raised numbers on the lower side of the block right above the oil pan. If they match any on this web page, you may find yours.
He only lists 1975 to 1986 258ci here.

Re: 258 Engine ID

Well I cleaned up the engine id plate with a scotch brite pad and it appears that I was missing a couple numbers. The engine id is 908CL29. I have to assume that this is the original '90 258 that came with the jeep. Anyone disagree?
