Need new engine in the CJ, Ideas please!!

My 258 is only working on 5 cylinders now. Not ignition and my plug gets covered with oil (replaced plugs, wires, cap, and rotor, didnt fix it). So either a bad valve or bad piston rings. The motor has hi miles so probably just time for a rebuild.
My options as of now are:

1. get rebuilt 4.2 long block and call it good
2. look for fuel injected 4.0 with low miles and install that. (nothing newer than 95)
3. 360 or 304 V-8 swap
4. or rebuilt 4.2 short block with 4.0 head

I am leaning away from a basic 4.2 since they are only rated at 110 HP. the 4.0's previous to 91 are about 150 HP and up to 95 are about 170 HP I think, both which sound ok. A stock 304 is pretty weak and a stock 360 sounds ok, but both are more complicated. The cool factor of a v-8 almost makes it worth it though.

So what do ya all think?

Go V8 and dont look back. 4.0's and 4.2's are great motors but they still arent a V8. A early 304 has much more power then the later ones. My 80 304 is a pig no doubt, but still is way stronger then the 6 of that year and its only a 10 HP difference. A 360 is a great swap no matter what. Just remember the earlier the better cause of the smog crap. If you are even thinking about fuel injection, To a motor and tranny swap and either go ford 5.0 power or dodge V8 power. Either way would be a great swap.

For Jeep power, I believe enough is enough. Jeeps aren't meant to go fast, and don't need a lot of power unless you're into heavy mud. I like a V8 and gobs of torque in a car, but am perfectly happy with whatever the 258 puts out in the Jeep.

It's a lot easier to change plugs and such, and there's more room for OBA, welder-generator, dual batteries and so on.

My nickle's worth.

I run a SBC in my Scrambler, but would have put in a 4.0 if I had one. The HO motor has 190 hp and still is capable of 18mpg. My 350 is mildly warmed up...has more power than I can use unless I need to pass a string of cars on the highway... Oh, and a 4.0 is easy to get past the smog nazis if needed.

Some times the KISS method is the best. How bout a 258 with a mc2100, tfi, msd box, maybe a mild cam, and header. Should be slimple and give you a little more kick. An amc v8 is the most simple v8 swap if you don't want fuel injection. Is your trans up to more power? Amc v8's come alive with a 4 barrel, edelbrock intake, and a cam.

Re: Need new engine in the CJ, Ideas please!!

You have to decide what is important to you and your jeep. I ended up putting a Jasper rebuilt 258 into my '84 CJ7. I have been pleased with it, but the Jasper engine was expensive. I had all ready put a bit of money into the 258 in the form of a Howell TBI and headers. If I had it to do all over again, I would have saved my money and went with a SBC to start with -- not for the power but because they are cheap and easy to come by. -- Mike

I'm SBC, but I like the 258 a lot. A 4.0 Liter is cool, but probably more work than a 304 or 360 with the FI (although FI would make it worth while). If you want to get away from the 258, I'd vote for a 360. There a dime a dozen (easier and cheaper to find than a 304), strong, and an easy swap.

Ahhh the KISS principle, it's always good

I have a 360 ready to rebuild... I can't decide. The 304 I worked up a couple of years ago is great... but the 258 is enough for most things I will want to do.

If you choose not to decide you still have made a choice. (Rush).
