258 Starter

I've heard them refered to as Ford starters. What Ford engine uses the same starter as the 258?

Re: 258 Starter

I don't know what ford engine used it, but AMC used a lot of of the shelf parts from other manufatures to save cost. Why design and build a new starter when someone else has already paid for doing that and you can just use theirs? The solenoid on the fender is also from ford. The T5 tranny came from of all places puegot.

Re: 258 Starter

It's not really a ford.....but the same design as they used for years.
Both were designed py prestolite. And many parts are interchangable. The difference is the "mounting head or nose" where it bolts to the engine. (some of the teeth are different too)

Oh the strange T5 facts and myths.

Here are a couple of links to informational pages on the Borg Warner T5. As with all web information please confirm any details from other sources.

Re: 258 Starter

just for clarity, not all 258's used the Ford starters...mine is a chrysler starter, mfd. by mitsubishi...the solenoid is not integrated, but actually bolted to the outside of the housing (part which bolts to the bellhousing - can't remember the name of it )

Re: 258 Starter

That is correct. Almost all 87 up yj starters that I have seen have been those.
The "prestolite" ones on jeeps are 86 back to my knowledge.
But on fords they use the same style up to around 89-90. (but some have a smaller case size by about 1/4"....on rwd V6/v8 models)

Re: 258 Starter

my 66 rustang used the same identical starter as my 78 cj-5 258, which is the same starter as my 78 360 so i guess they are the same
