O/T: Better cover your ears!!!

FWIW: For you younger guys who still have a chance to keep what you've got...

Just past 10:00 here; quiet w/ exception of kids playing... (what else? Guns!). My 7yr old son just called out from another room "Hey dad! Your watch!" Holding it up to my ear, and sure enough! the alarm was beeping. I never heard a thing.

Many years of shooting countless rounds, working in a body shop and other loud places without hearing protection has made me next to deaf - been that way for decades and I'm only 42! (Cannot hear myself; what did I say? )

No matter how young, no one's Superman and thereby indestructable. Protect your ears (and eyes)... you'll be glad you did when the grey starts sprouting from your temples.

Again, FWIW.

Would you mind repeating that? I only heard part of it.

"3. Just think how wise you're gettin!"

Reminds me of another quote.
"The older I get the smarter my father becomes."

"The older I get, the better I was...."

Hearing? Seeing? I'd be happy if I could remember stuff...like what it was to hear...and see (without these darn glasses)! And I'm only 43...my wife's gonna have her hands full when I get old.

Re: O/T: Better cover your ears!!!

Well stated. About ten years ago, I participated in a statewide study of firearms instructors regarding hearing loss and lead ingestion. The study concluded that neither ear plugs or head phones by themselves protected the ears.

With ear plugs, energy is still transmitted to the ear drum through the skull. Headphones solve the problem, but the wearing of glasses and/or a hat creates gaps for the sound to get through. The solution is to "double plug", wear both headphones and ear plugs. Double plugging solved all of my problems. I used to get headaches and have ringing in my ears after the range, and now I don't. I won't shoot without double plugging. I also wear headphones in the garage whenever I use something loud.

I can't believe that the military still uses ear plugs only. And cheap ones at that.

Both my father and uncle wear hearing aids and it looks like a major PIA. Take care of your hearing!

Re: O/T: Better cover your ears!!!

I have always had good ears. Good musical ears. (except when the wifes talking )
After a recent cold my ears were sore, then plugged. IT SUX.
I don't know how I would deal with it if it had to last forever. (and hope it won't)
Be careful people.

Re: O/T: Better cover your ears!!!

Dirt Dog....
Try putting about 15 drops of hydrogen peroxide in each ear for about 10 minutes each. Rinse them out with warm water afterwards. That should clear up any of the waxy build up that most colds seem to help produce. That should solve the problem for you. Only do it once to each ear though! A dry ear canal is very irritating!

Safety.....

Living with a speech languange pathologist / audiologist, I get the lectures all the time from her. Ear and eye protection are some of the most basic safety things that seem to get overlooked. Just try to imagine yourself never seeing your wife or kids again (visually) or not being able to hear them call your name. Pretty scary if you really stop and think about it.
Imagine not being able to look at boobies again!! That should scare some of you into wearing your safety glasses.
The only way that ear protection hurts you, is by leaving it unused.
