Another slap for the Jeep engineers

When did they decide to make two piece radiators? I have an aluminum body with a plastic top section that is held on by tabs that are bent around it. Well, due to the crazy cold weather (I was told), the radiator needs to come out so they can replace the gasket between the body and top section, and the tabs need to be re-bent. That is $135, or if the plastic is cracked, I am looking at $300 for a new radiator.

2000 vehicle with a leaking radiator???

Someone needs to be shot for that design.

That's a Chrysler thing and it's too easy of a target to poke fun at them, the Willys, Kaiser and AMC engineers on the other hand........

Re: Another slap for the Jeep engineers

Well if it comes to having to replace the radiator,, If it were me,,, I would by an all metal after market. For about the same money or less you can have METAL and when you are done it, if need be, it can be REPAIRED for REASONABLE amount. On the other hand if you buy another plastic unit you have just spent $300.00 for a PLASTIC unit and are right back where you started from. I did this with a Nissan that I used to own,, way better operation and actualy cost me $35.00 less

Re: Another slap for the Jeep engineers

LEVE just posted this on another thread I think it applies here also.

1. If you don't like being lectured to... skip this reply .
2. This is a case of ignorance not being bliss.
3. When we won't/can't/refuse to learn about "things" in life,
4. We are doomed to be at the mercy of others...
5. True freedom is in knowledge,
6. And the right application of knowledge,
7. That's called wisdom.
8. By judicious removal of ignorance,
9. About the vehicles we ride in every day...
10. We become more free,
11. Free from the ignorance,
12. That lightens our wallets,
13. Consumes our resources,
14. Consumes our time,
15. And generally drives us nuts.
16. Now it is time to
# Get out them tech manuals
# Remove some ignorance
# Be a little more unhappy
# Be a little more free
# From the chains of debt and doubt.
17. It's your choice,
18. There's always time to learn.

[/ QUOTE ]1. When the varied purchasers of Jeep came on the scene,
2. The associated engineering (an management staff) transfered,
3. With the sales of the companies.
4. So as example:[*]Willys engineering staff became Kaiser[*]Kaiser engineering staff became AMC ( associated with Renault for a while).[*]AMC engineering staff went to Chrysler.
5. So each company could still have some ol' Willys employees,
6. But it dwindled with each passing year,
7. Like we're now loosing our WWII vets.
8. But each company must shoulder it's share,
9. Of management/budget decisions for what's become of Jeep,
10. Like it or not,
11. They all had a hand in it...

Re: Another slap for the Jeep engineers

You would have to do a lot of slapping and not just the Jeep engineers. Just about every car made in the last 15+ years has that type of radiator in it.

Re: Another slap for the Jeep engineers

You beat me to that comment. But it's a fact. Almost everything has a plastic/aluminium radiator these days.

They say "weight savings = fuel savings"
I say "cheaper saves THEM $$$$$"

Re: Another slap for the Jeep engineers

Excellent points LEVE..... but may I say you really are taking things a bit too seriously. Kick back have a beer and watch a football game or something.

On second thought.... go out get in a Jeep and take a ride, yeah that's the ticket.

Re: Another slap for the Jeep engineers

I seem to remember reading a post on the quadratec board about some aftermarket rad that is all metal. No plastic tanks. Do a search over there, im sure you will find plenty of others who have had the same problem.
