Rac and Pinion on a Jeep... Pics to prove it!

Hey All,
When i first bought my jeep, it was pretty modified and I could tell someone put alot of money into it with the new motor and all but the thing that threw me for the biggest loop was the rack and pinion steering. Someone had made a custom bracket to fit the unit and mounted it right in front of the axle. It was smooth as a baby’s bottom on the road but as far as offroading went, it was giving me more troubles than anything. With the lift and oversized tires and all it was just too weak. So needless to say I took it off and had to rebuild the steering from scratch. I ordered a AGR box from Quadraatec and found most everything else pretty easily around town. It was a fairly easy job and took me a good solid 2 weekends to get all the parts and assemble everything. Its a great idea if someone out there is creating a custom monster for road use only; however, it just wasn’t rock or mud friendly.

Re: Rac and Pinion on a Jeep... Pics to prove it!

I know you didn't ask but I got a few Suggestions,,,,,,,,,,

1. Get rid of the lower stabalizer,,,,,,,,take it off and save it for when the upper one wears out. It IS going to get distroyed mounted that low.
If you need two stabalizers, then there are other problems with the steering that need work,,,,,,,,,which brings me to number two.

2. Those shackles are huge, putting alot of stress on the hangers, throwing the caster off( making the steering un-stable, "wandering" @ highway speed), and reducing your approach angle. I suggest some lift springs for the front.

3. Cut those spring plate bolts

4 Add a steering box brace, it will save the frame where the box mounts.

And 5. IMO, rack and pinion on a Jeep is not the smartest idea, you did the right thing by removing it.

BTW: Those pics prove what?

Now I shall
