transmission lever removal

hi there

i have an 82 CJ7 with the T4 tranny.

how do you remove the shifter lever that comes up from the floor. it looks as though there are 2 things to be pushed in on each side and then lift up but i can't get that to work.

any ideas?

Re: transmission lever removal

It is a collar that sits in the top of the housing. Spring loaded holds the ball on the shifter lever in place. The 2 pins you see are part of the housing. Push down on that collar (2 stubby screwdrivers works well) and turn it about 1/4 turn CCW, it should pop up. Then just pull the shifter out.

Re: transmission lever removal

The T4 is a different style than that. My old T4 had two set screws on the shaft down near the tranny. Loosen them and pull up on the shaft. My set screws would always come loose and the shaft would fall off as I would be shifting.
