Brake light sensitivity

On my '87 YJ, I have to push the brakes down very far to get the brake lights to come on. When I just tap on the brakes, the lights do not come on. It's kind of dangerous to people behind me. My question is, is this adjustable on the YJ? Can I adjust when the brake lights will come on? If it is, where can I adjust it. Thanks in advance for the help.

Re: Brake light sensitivity

If it's like the CJ, it's burried up above the steering collum. Follow your brake pedal up behind the dash and you should be able to see the electrical connection and switch. It has threads and can be screwed in and out to change the timming of when the switch operates. It's a real PITA to get to.

Re: Brake light sensitivity

Check the switch that is attached to the brake push rod (from peddal to MC) Ensure that the flat side is up. If it is, the switch may then be worn. It is kind of a funny setup but appears to work if all is well.
