258 exhaust Manifold this irepost with more info

It appears that some of the plumbing has been removed from my exhaust manifold and replaced with some bolts. What was originally there? Do these bolts need to be sealed? If they do, what should they be sealed with?

Sorry about the lack of info

I have an 85 CJ7 and it is still pretty much stock as far as I can tell. The previous owner removed most of the emissions stuff but I am new to the Jeep world and I have no idea what it looked like originally. The bolts go into the "elbow" of each of the manifold/port connections. They are threaded and have had two little holes on them welded shut. The bolt itself is hollow and appears to have been some kind of vent.

Any other info would greatly help Thanks

I replaced the hollow bolts with 5/8" fine thread bolts if memory serves. I got the bolts at NAPA and cut them down so they were flush with the inside of the manifold. This was on an AMC V8 though. Don't know if the 6 is the same size.

Did you use any thread sealer on the bolts? Does it matter if you don't?

Those are for the air injection. On my '78 they are 1/4" tapered pipe thread. Brass pipe plugs work perfectly and won't sieze. You might want to take them out some day.
