89 wrangler engine 2.5 to a 4.0 from a 91 cherokee

This is my first post. I am sure I will prob have many many more questions but thought I'd start with one dealing with the wire harness on my Jeep....

I have an 89 Jeep wrangler that I've owned since it was new.

I had a shop in Texas replace the 2.5 engine with a 4.0 fuel injected engine from a wrecked 91 Cherokee. That was about 70,000 miles ago when the 2.5 had around 100,000 miles on it.

The shop spliced the 2.5 engines wire harnes with the harness that came with from the cherokee 4.0 engine. I've always had trouble with that engine starting and I have a very sneakiy suspicion it is from the bad wiring job that was performed. *cut wires everywhere not going to anything... a real mess. And for reasons I'd prefer not to get into here (also because I've moved out of state since then), i do not want to go back to that shop for a resolution.

Now for my question...

Where can a get a clean, well made wire harness for the 4.0 engine that is now in my 89 wrangler?

I'm not sure if the PCM that is in there came from the Cherokee or if it is the original that came with my wrangler, but I imagine that it came from the cherokee.

My next thread will deal with my idea of posibly doing another engine swap... perhaps going back to a rebuilt 2.5 and then I don't have to worry about splicing in a wire harness and could instead use a stock 2.5 wire harness and computer.

btw, where could I get a 2.5 wire harness and computer?

What tranny do you have in it now? The AX-15, AW-4? The tranny that came in the XJ? If it was a '91 from an XJ, it should be a Mopar HO system, if this is the case, Hesco's harness should work. The PCM (sbec) should have a 60 pin connector with a 8mm nut holding the plug on.

Re: 89 wrangler engine 2.5 to a 4.0 from a 91 cher

Thank you for all the replies. Here is what I've decided to do...

There is a definate electrical short somewhere so I'm going tow it to my mechanic to have the alternator tested.. then have them examine the wireing and fuel system to see where to go from there

I'm going to be having them try to drain the fuel tank somehow (I currently have the original 15 gal metal tank from the 2.5 engine) and get the sludge out. Any ideas on how this could be done... they just drain it and then dry out the inside or something? I suspect since it's sat for most of the last 5 years that there is bad contaminated gas and gunk in there.

And just incase it is needed, I am looking for a replacement composit tank from a 91 - 95 4.0 fuel injected wrangler. But having a little trouble finding them.

After dealing with the fuel delivery we will look at the wiring and alternator, etc...

Anyways, that is what my plan is.
