......Dana 44 (front) outer axle seal

I just bought a D44 from Sams (basically a wagoneer axle modified for my CJ7). It has inner axles seals (near the pumpkin), but no outer seals which press into the tube, and seal the axleshaft. The axle tube has rust dust and crap on the inside of the tube up to the seals.

Does the front D44 normally have outer axle tube seals? If not can I put some on (who has them?) I really don't want water and mud and crap filling the axle tube.

Re: ......Dana 44 (front) outer axle seal

most front 44s that I have seen DONT have that outer seal.

I have heard that some FORDs have them, I havent verified that.

I have also heard that any housing can be machined to fit a seal on the outer end.

you might be able to fit a seal in there as it is, I havent spent much time looking at a front axle in a while.

If you look at your dana 30, it doesn't have seals at the end of the tube either. There is a company that started making some but they are about $200.

Here's a review of them.

Drivetrain Direct is the sole distributor according to their site.

I've seen them in either 4 Wheel Hardware's or Qudratec's catalog too. IMHO it's way to much $$$ and you don't really gain anything just rinse the tubes out every now and then to keep the dirt out. Atleast with out them water can run out but if water gets past the grease where does it stay?

I just installed mine yesterday. I ordered them from Qudratec. I changed my U-joints to the Spicer 5-760X at the same time. Have not taken them on the beach yet. They look pretty good and seem to keep the seal pretty well.

I used to be of the same thought..."why don't they have outher seals". Now I see that it's just a way to hold more water in. (at least to me) I know they have worked fine that way without them for years. Just wash them out evey once in a while. You never even know that you're missing them untill it time to tear them apart. THEN............it's time to hose out before you take them apart.

If I were to use them, I would clean out the housing real well and eliminate the inner seals. But they are too pricey for me.

Re: ......Dana 44 (front) outer axle seal

Will, thanks for the link.

Here is a quote from the review:
"Near the outer end of the inner shafts on that axle the factory places little saucer-like plastic guards designed to keep debris out of the axletubes. They do a fine job of rejecting rocks, dirt and thick mud"

My D30 does not have these, and neither does my new D44. Any idea if the D44 came with these plastic rings and where I can get them.

Thanks for the info guys, much appreciated.
