cleaning pistons

I have the head off and I cleaned it nicely, however top of the pistons are covered with black gunck. Is it ok to clean top of the pistons with wire brush (or will that scratch them)? Any cleaning tips or am I better of just leaving them as is? (I will not be pulling out block At this time)
Thanks

Re: cleaning pistons

dont use a wire brush........go get some "purple power" or "purple stuff" and let it soak, then use a scour pad like the dark red one from 3M and that should take alot of junk off of them

later

Re: cleaning pistons

DON'T clean them. If you clean them without removing them, some of what you clean off will fall between the pistons and the cylinder wall. You wont be able to get it all out and then you WILL be removing them.
