What 5 speed tranny should I swap?

'75 CJ-5 304 V8 T-15 3spd dana 20 Tcase, dana 30 front, dana 44 rear, 4.27 gears.

I am going to use the jeep for occasional off road, mostly daily driver. Will make 40 mile highway trip 2-4 times per week, otherwise around town. I think a 5 speed can improve mileage, so I would like to consider one.

The 3spd I have is ok for around town and stuff, but will probly need rebuild in a year or so. I would like to plan on a swap instead of rebuild. Have looked at T-18 swap (thanks to all who replied to that thread) and that still may be the way I go, but I think overdrive is more important than granny low, particularly since I am not going to be doing rock crawling.

From my reading I am leaning towards AX15 for cost and size reasons, but I am open to suggestions.

As always, thanks in advance oh gods and godesses of Jeep knowledge.

Re: What 5 speed tranny should I swap?

You might want to check out Advance Adapters website. They supposedly sell a kit to put one of Ford's 3sp with OD manual trannies up to your D20. They call the tranny a "T & C four speed" (or something like that). It was in Ford cars and truck during the late 70's and early 80s. You have to replace the output shaft, but this isn't too hard on a manual transmission. I was interested in this exact swap, but I want it for my Dana 300. So I'm trying to come up with a "home brew" answer..... still to be finished.....

As long as that is your objective. If you are trying to save money by increasing gas mileage, figure out how many miles you'd have to drive to recoup the cost of the conversion.

:slaps forhead: Will! Thanks for pointing that out I hadn't thought it through, was just thinking low mileage BAD, hi mileage GOOD . My other car is a Honda Civic and I am just used to doing 75 with the engine loafing along in overdrive. Definitely un Jeep like

Oh well, nevermind. I just got caught up in transmission upgrade fever. Even the most basic upgrade would take 5-10 years to pay off.

Thanks all
