O/T 97 vw golf trans.

i am looking at purchasing a 1997 vw golf gl. when i test drove it i noticed that the thrid gear makes a grinding noise. it will still shift and you can;t feel it or anything but yiou can hear it. i was wondering if any of you might know what is going on here? is it a synchro or somthign else? is this a major problem or nothing to worry about? how much will this cost to fix and woud it be worth it to purchse the car? the car has only 70437 miles on a 2.0 litre engine adn it is inmaculate inside and out, as well as under the hood. what woud you do if your were me? thans for all the input.

Re: O/T 97 vw golf trans.

Just on the shift from 2nd to 3rd? The 2-3 synchro is probably worn/shot... It's not a huge deal, but if you neglect it for an extended period of time you'll end up doing damage to the actual gears in the tranny.

How expensive is it to fix? You're basically going to have to rebuild the trans if you want new synchro rings... so, to have someone do it for you... $1000-1500?
