Got a line on a free ford 302, has anyone used 1?

My dad is going to give me his 302 out of a ford ranchero. My question is, will it be a good engine to use in a jeep. I know I can get an Adv. Adapter conversion kit, but will it bee as good as a amc 360? It should weigh a little less right.

It seems to be a pretty popular swap. A guy down the road has a 302 in his CJ-5. the only problem i can think of is ford seems to be the most expensive engine to buy parts for. even though i am not a fan of ford for free i say go for it.

302's are great motors. have one in my ranger doin just fine. and no, they are not the most expensive motor to build. more expensive than chebby but not even close to mopar part prices.

what driveline is in that ranchero? most of those trucks have the np435 which youd be hard pressed to beat. you may want to swap the whole thing over rather than fooling with $texas adapters. and what driveline is in your jeep now? is it even up to the 302?

i stand corrected have had both mopar and ford. Mopar didn't use enough parts to consider expensive i guess. but boy the ford liked em.

I still have the ax15 and np231, I will have to find something else to put behind it. Is the oil pan, (sump) a big problem with that engine?

Depending on your jeep, you may not even need to buy a swap kit. The T150 or T176 will bolt to the 302 with the right bellhousing.

If you do a search on here, you'll find more information than you need. But most posts call the engine a 5.0.

Ford engines are more expensive to work on. But this is becoming less of an issue with the 302/5.0. The Mustang crowd has everybody putting out parts for it. The prices have really come down ..... hardly an issue any more.

Oh... and the Ranchero is like chevy's Elcamino. It's not gonna have the NP435 transmission. That's in the REAL trucks.

Oh... I didn't realize you were a "newer" jeeper. I have no swap info on the Wranglers.

The oil pan isn't an issue at all. Any newer 5.0 oil pan is gonna be "rear sump" pan. That is what you want. Any Mustang/Crown Vic will have the oil pan you need.

Not even close the AMC 360 would run circles around the old 302 and most likely outlast it too. The other thing is no $$$$ adapters to buy.

Maybe it would run circles around "THE OLD 302, but it wouldn't take much for that engine to put out some REAL hp!! In stock form it's no dog. And don't forget how HEAVY that 360 is! It's not a real issue when you are on the street, but get that nose up or down, and you'll wish you had the 302.
