Jimmy id on tranny/xcase 79 3/4 ton

Hi guys
I posted this on the chevy page but that place is dead

My Dad just bought a 79 3/4 ton Jimmy 4x4. 10 bolt front and 14 bolt rear. It has a 350 and a 3 speed w/granny low tranny (total 4 forward gears). The transcase is all cast iron. Any ideas on what they may be? maybe a SM460 or 465 with a 205 xcase?

The tranny is an sm465 which is an excellent tranny. Not sure on the t-case, but I think a 208 maybe. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Transfer case should be a 205. Are you sure about the front being a 10 bolt? A lot of the 3/4 tons had d 44 front ends...

The transfer case won't be a 208. But there is a chance it could be a 203. Hopefully it is a 205 though. 203 and 205 were the transfer cases that year.

In 79 they did use a GM 10 bolt and 14 bolt rear in their trucks. Have a set in the garage. The tranny should be a SM465 and like WILL said, could be a 203 or 205 case. Being a 3/4 ton it should be the 205. I think the 203's were in the halftons..... I have a big thick repair manual for those models that I can look for noticable differences...

if it's a full time 4 wheel drive it will be a 203, if part time 4 wheel drive then it's 205. More than likely you have a 205. Here's a link to a page that has a couple of pics and description for you offroaddesign
Hope this helps

Re: Jimmy id on tranny/xcase 79 3/4 ton

Thanks for all the info.

It is a part time and from the pics, and it's the 205.
The front is the 10 bolt and not the 44.
14 bolt rear.
Fresh 350.
sm465 is very good

HHHHMMMM,, my Dad is going to restore this truck, I wonder how it will work with a D30/35 setup and a straight 6 with np231?
