disk brake rotor shields, leave on or take off?

I am in the process of redone my 86 cj7. The splash shields on the dana 30 that shield the rotors are crunchy at best. I was going to buy new ones but I know for a fact that mud gets stuck in there when wheeling, I thought it might be a benefit to leave them off. Not sure if legally it is a problem and not sure if it will effect cooling. Just looking for some thoughts.

Thanks

Never had them when I converted to discs... so I left them off. No problems for the past 2.5 years.

Wish I'd known that in the spindle nut post, I'd have told you to put some pressure on the back side and unscrew the nut. Wouldn't work with drums.

As to the shields, I removed the front ones and never had any when I converted to discs on the rear.
