Just got my first Jeep.

After looking for what seemed like forever I finally found a CJ.

1980 CJ7
258 with about 75K
6 inch suspension lift SUA
3.54 gears
35x14.5 Super Swamper TSLs with about 75% tread left
TF727 auto with Lokar kickdown installed
Dana 300
Heavy duty front and rear bumpers
Heavy duty lockout hubs
Rebuilt carb
New wires
New coil
New Radiator

Frame is perfect, body is rusty. Runs great. I am looking to restore for daily driving and modify some more for off road. Where should I start?

Give your credit cards and checkbook to someone you trust to hold them for you and not let you near them.

I'm having a hard time with an '80 with only 75k and a rusted body. Maybe 175k or 275k? My '80 has 288k showing on the speedo and the PO said add at least 2k for the miles driven with a broken cable.

No need to get in a hurry to spend money on it, you'll spend enough without having to try. As things go wrong, you might consider upgrades. It'll let you know what it wants.

Re: Just got my first Jeep.

I'd put some 1 peice axles in the Dana 20 in the rear and regear both front and back if you plan to keep the lift and tires.

What is your budget and we can work off of that. There's a lot I could recomend but it would go into the tens of thousands.

Re: Just got my first Jeep.

Let's not confuse him already, the rear axle is an AMC Model 20 not a Dana 20. A Dana 20 is a t-case.

Before you change axle shafts check out the one piece vs full floaters thread.

Oh, and your first two purchases should be the Haynes AND Chiltons manuals. How you fixed for tools? Got Torx?

Re: Just got my first Jeep.

EEKS, my bad Taz. The rear diff is an AMC model 20 and one of the transfer cases available in CJ's was the Dana 20.

With 10k you'll be sitting pretty good to get that thing going. There's A LOT you can do with that money.
