O/T - free anti-virus software

Just thought I would post this in case anyone else out there is interested. I was using Norton Anti-virus, but found it cut the performance of my older machine down dramatically. This AVG software is free, and has sped up my old 600mhz celeron machine significantly. Anyone with an older machine like mine has probably noticed the detrimental effect on performance of Norton Anti-virus. This is a free alternative, that works well.

Any idea about how well they keep up with new viruses? That has to take a lot of maintenance work.

I've used it over a year and never had a problem. It has a auto update feature and they have atleast weekly updates. They make their money protecting large networks and this is a version they offer us common folk. It's a quality program and not a resource hog like Norton.

I run Spybot and Lavasoft's Adaware anti-spyware programs regularly with Norton and between the three I have been able to keep my system pretty clean. Spybot takes a little more difficult to use but will remove stuff that Norton won't.

I've used and continue to use AntiVir. Its made in Germany and is free for use my individuals. It is a wicked program that doesn't impact the computer resources at all. It WILL destroy the virus...and the files its in.

It was designed to stop the virus at all costs because home users spread the viruses that cause major commerical disasters, so they figured, kill the home users files.

If you're a computer nut, replacing the lost files isn't that bad a deal and man is it capable!
