O/T Take 2 -When to start looking for a new job.

My career, for the past 20+ years has been in family business (Convenience Stores & Gas stations). We have decided to sell for a number of reasons. My Dad will retire, more or less, and I need to find a job. My dilemma is we aren’t closing until Nov. 1 – 15, 2003, do I send out resumes now or will that upset potential employers?

Any help you can offer will be appreciated.

Thanks!

You should start to throw resumes out there now. Make sure that on your application or on your resume you let them know when you are available to start though. That way if they are looking to replace someone that will be retiring in that same time period you will be a prime canidate. You may however take yourself out of the loop for positions that are immediatly available.

I agree with John. The job market is too tight to wait until the last minute. Get resumes out there ASAP with your potential starting date. Good luck in your jobsearch.

I agree with the above somewhat. Don't put a potential start date on your resume - that will go on the application if they decide to interview you. Get the resumes out now as November is coming faster than you think.

Any reason to separate candidates for a job and they will - meaning if your resume says can't start until November 15 - they may not even interview you. You need to interview as you could be the right person for the job. Interview process can be a few weeks - depending on schedules - most people want you to give at least two weeks notice to previous employer - shows them you would do the same for them if you left. That is over a month right there - and if you were to interview tommorow you would be close to November.

Good luck!

I agree with Budd. Don't give them a reason to toss your resume before you even get interviewed. Good employees that fit in are hard to find, when someone finds one, they will be willing to work with you.
You may even get an offer that is so good, it will be worth it to find someone to cover for the family business so you can start your new job.
