78 CJ7 w/304 sr4/dana 300...going to put a t-176

I picked up a t-176 tranny. Came from a 85' I think, mated to a dana300. I will be swapping out my sr4 tranny with the t-176. I believe it should bolt right up as this was bolted to a 300. I was wondering what problems I might run in to, and if I will have to shorten/lengthing my drive shafts. The bell housing is for a t-150 which should accept the t-176. The clutch has the same size and spline...so I only think I may have to modify the drive shafts. Thanks guys...

The tranny itself is about 1 1/2" longer, plus there was a factory adapter between the 300 and the t-176. If you got the adapter, it's a bolt up opperation except for the drive shafts.

I replaced my T4/D300 combo with a T176/D300 combo, and the general is right on. You need the factory adapter for the T176 to mate to the D300. The driveshafts are diferent lengths also. I Got the T176, adapter and driveshafts all from the donor vehicle. You will also need the metal cover around the gearshifts on the floor as they will be in a new location. Actually mine are further forward now than with the T4. You could just cut yours out a little more, but you might run out of steel to cut.

I am getting the adapter with it. The only thing the tranny is missing is the shift lever. If I can't locate one, I can obtain one from 4WD Hardware for about $80. Is the T-176 a good tranny? I don't do a tremendous amount of off road, mainly a weekend driver and every now and then go off road...don't really abuse it too much...at least not YET!!!LOL Any idea where I may find the shifter (handle) at?

The t-176 is considered a medium duty tranny, but I've seen them take alot of abuse. Behind your 304, I think you'll be fine, especially if you don't intend on abusing it off road ALL of the time. For you intended purposes, I think it's a good choice. Can't help ya' on the shifter though.

I've got the same set up, sr4 and 304. I have a T-176 to swap in too. What does the adapter for the T-176 look like? Can you show me a picture of it?
Also, will I have to change the bellhousing?

Thanks for the help.

Thanks, That picture helps. Now I need to look at mine and see if I was lucky enough to get the adapter too. Probably not though.

But, will I need a new bellhousing and I probably will need a new transmission mount too, right?

Thanks.
