Transmission swap ??

I'm looking for a T-19A tranny for my Jeep. It is a 73 cj 5 with a 304. I'm currently running 3.73 gears. I have been told this a tranny with a really low 1st gear. Currently I have a T-15 and I have lots of power with the 31x 10.50's on it now but I want to go up to 33's and don't want to add lower gears at the risk of slowing me down on the hiway as I will be using my jeep on and off road. Are ther any other vehicles that had this tranny in it that I could look for other than jeeps.

Re: Transmission swap ??

It came in IH Scouts and pickups as well, along with some ford vehicles...not sure what years or models. Do a search on the web. You can find some stuff here:
http://www.jeeptech.com/convtrans/

You can also get a T-18A but I don't believe that 1st gear is synchronized in that one like it is in the T-19A. There is also the SM 420...it has a syncronized first gear with a lower first gear than the T-19A... 7.05:1 and it is considered a heavy duty tranny.

Good luck!

Re: Transmission swap ??

Wow, I didn't know the SM420 had a syncronized first gear. When did that happen?

Re: Transmission swap ??

I'm running an SM420 behind a SBC.

First gear synchro is no big deal. It's so low, that you pull out in second unless your 4wheeling. But my question is... You can bolt it to a 304? Then, he will have to run an adapter to the xfer case. Not cheap.

Re: Transmission swap ??

cheap??? Nobody mentioned cheap... I was just throwing some more options out there. I should have mentioned that adapters would be needed with that option. Sorry.

Re: Transmission swap ??

Yep I want to do this CHEAP!!! No adapters unless I absolutly have to. THere's no problem finding another bell housing. I think I'll find me a T-19A. Now for my next question. How can I identify the difference between a 19A and a 19. I hear they look the same.

Re: Transmission swap ??

Unfortunately, I only know about what I run. I don't know anything about the T19, but Novak Adapters might have some info for you. It's worth a read.

Good luck.
