Re: WHERE ARE ALL THE VIN PLATES

I bought a '79 CJ-7 from the original owner. He gave me a stack of paperwork with it, all the receipts for work done to it from day 1. No major bodywork. So I think the vin plate was never disturbed. There was only one. It was attached with rusty serrated head rivets to the grill under the hood on the flat area next to the hood latch. Now supposedly the vin number was stamped on the right side frame in the rear on the inside around the spring/axle area. I looked and looked all over the frame and never found any evidence of ir. The frame was very rusty. There was not a vin plate near the wiper motor. Do a search here and see what other info. you can find.

Re: WHERE ARE ALL THE VIN PLATES

Your vin tag should be a little metal tag mounted below the brake booster on the firewall. A couple pop rivits is all that holds it in place.

Re: WHERE ARE ALL THE VIN PLATES

Yup, my memory failed me on the location. As for the frame stamp, I thought I read it was on the top of the frame not the side in that location.

I'll go look in a minute under the hood. I have my vin on a sticker on the left side of the dash where the later CJ's have a speaker grill.

Re: WHERE ARE ALL THE VIN PLATES

On my '78 the VIN is stamped on the TOP of the right frame tube over the rear axel. Of course, being on top it holds water which promotes rust, and all the crud in the world lands on top of it. Sandpaper will show it better than a wire brush. At best it's not going to be real distinct.
