York pump Identification and oiling question

I have two yorks sitting here at my house, one off an pre 80's waggy (upright model) and one off an 80+ model (horizontal mount) I can't seem to find a reference as to how to ID the cfm of the pump. Anybody point me in the right direction???

As for the oiling, are they oiled differently?? One being mounted sideways and all, I can't imagine it would spit oil, but nonetheless my curiousity is getting at me. I am not at all familiar with AC systems either, but the pump still would have to have been oiled for an AC setup right, so mounting sideways should be no big deal??

There should be a metal tag with a model number on it. It is a five digit number. The last three refer to cfm and output. 10 is the 10" stroke pump and is the biggest. 09 is the 9" and 08 is the 8", then R for right, or L for left. If it doesn't have the tag, you can pull the pully and look at the crankshaft. I can't remember the differences thought, but someone on this board knows I'm sure.

Well, no tags, so I might have to look at the shaft I guess to find out the displacement.

Is anybody here running their york sideways?? I have found references both for and against doing this as far as oiling is concerned. Should I adapt the sideways mount to accept the york vertically?? Or is it ok to run horizontal??

my York is sideways - just make sure the oil fill hole is on top still when mounted sideways.

cool beans, I didn't want to be the only guy on here to put it on sideways and pump all the oil out the first time the clutch kicked in....

Mine's sideways too. No problems.

If you remember where you saw someone say not to mount it sideways, I'd like to see it so I can see why they think that. I've never heard anything negative about it. The Volvo I pulled mine from had it mounted sideways, so I can't imagine there being a big problem.

[img]images/graemlins/tongue.gif[/img] Here is the scoopola on laying a York on it's side: There is an INTERNAL PASSAGE that connects the intake chamber of the pump to the crankcase. [img]images/graemlins/tongue.gif[/img] That passage allows returning refrigerant to mix with the crankcase oil and do what it is supposed to do. [img]images/graemlins/tongue.gif[/img] WHEN YOU USE THE YORK AS AN AIR COMPRESSOR, you have to plug that little passage IF....and this is the key......the intake is the low port on the compressor when it is on it's side. If the intake port is the high one, or the compressor is used in a vertical mount, NO PROBLEM. [img]images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]If you don't plug that little internal passage and the intake port is the low port, the lube oil from the crankcase will flow into the intake chamber and for a while you will have very oily compressed air. [img]images/graemlins/blush.gif[/img] After a while the oil will quit coming out and trhe compressor will sieze up from lack of oil. [img]images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img]
