axle cutting measurement

I am putting together a dana 44 front axle for my cj-7. the housing i have needs to have the long side cut down, yoke reattached and the axle shaft shortened in a shop. how much leeway does a person have in the measuring? What if the axle shaft is one eighth of an inch too long or too short? does it need to be spot on, close, 100ths of an inch or eigths? thanks!

Re: axle cutting measurement

Welcome to the BBS.
I always rely on my handy dandy tape measure for the job, so I guess my tolerance range to be about a 1/16. But I would have to say that an 1/8 would cut the mustard just fine.

Ask Jeepgod, if I remember correctly, he had one that didn't make the tolerence.

I was thinking of him when I posted that. I guess you do have to stay tighter than in inches, but it's so hard to measure things accurately with a beverage in one hand.

Re: axle cutting measurement

thanks for the replies, i have a micrometer, but axles are hard to get good measurements on, due to the shape. i think i can get it within 1/16, but nice to know i may have just a bit of error room. is JeepGod out there? would like to here what he has to say. thanks steven g.
