Q-Jet Carb... Falls on it\'s Face....***UPDATED***

I just swaped my Edelbrock carb for a Q-Jet off of a 78 Caddy w/ 425. I know, 800 cfm is too big for a 304. I rebuilt the Q-jet and put it on. It starts up and idles fine I can even rev the snot out of it. But when I put it in gear it has no power, it just dies. I know this problem has been addressed here before but I can't find any of the threads when I search.

27-spline, 14" & 27" end to center of eye? You can have 'em for the shipping.

I took a college course on carburetors and we studied the Q-Jet extensively because it was brand new. That's been at least 35 years, and I don't remember squat about them. Sorry.

Did you check for vacuum leaks? especially around the adapter.

How many turns out are the mixture screws?

Are you using the thick base gasket that came with the kit and not the thin one that the adapters come with?

Just a few things off the top of my brain

Also spray a little carb cleaner around the throttle shaft and see what happens.

Re: Q-Jet Carb... idles fine no power

2 1/2 sounds about right but it varies from engine to engine, I just asked that to make sure they were not not way off like covering up a vacuum leak. Did you adjust by vacuum gauge?

I just noticed you had a manual trans so when you let the clutch out and give it gas it dies? Kinda bogs and dies?

Is the accel pump squirting? You should beable to look down the throat (primary side) and see two steady streams of gas when you pump the throttle.

I also know some kits come with a few choices for gaskets are you positive you used the right ones. Sometimes it can be just one little hole off or missing.

Yes, it's doing a great job!

I only had one that was in question, it's so hard to tell. It went between the middle piece and the top piece. That one I'm not sure of, there was only the slightest difference. The rest were no brainers.

Just a check here but, you do have the adapter for the Q-jet to fit the square bore intake...Right??

Re: Q-Jet Carb... idles fine no power

As I remember there's a "dangly" as you assemble it. The "dangly" has to drop in the right hole, sometimes it misses and goes to the side. That "dangly" is part of the power valve section. So not in place it'll be too lean - internal vacuum leak without enrichment.
At idle you can compensate for it with the mixture screws so you think everyuthing's OK, but it won't enrichen enough for acceleration.

Remove the top and get it on right. Much safer off the car.

Also check the pump operation.

Re: Q-Jet Carb... idles fine no power

I found a leak in the hose that used to go to the brake power booster. Fixed that problem.

Now I have another problem w/ it. Whenever I get into the secondarys it coughs up a lung.
At first it would go into the secondary but just for a second or two (it wouldn't really get to or hold a high rpm), so I readjusted the float to 3/16 below top of casting (float bowl assy.). Now I can't get into the secondary at all. Unless I go into them REAL S-L-O-W, then I can get it up to the usual rpm but I can never put the pedal to the floor or it will cough.
I'm thinking.....not enough air???????????
