Throttle sometimes sticks with bumps? WHY

My '91 YJ 4.0's throttle will randomly stick on bumps causing the rpms to stay around 2k for up to 10seconds with my foot off the gas and the clutch down. It usually then dies down. This can sometimes be annoying and I'd like to know if there is a reason or cure? Thanks! jered

I'd pop the hood and play with the throttle linkage some. See if it feels like it's sticking at all. Also, check the return spring, and make sure it's good and stiff. If the cable is well worn, it might not be sliding in the sheeth well enough.

you might also check the tps connection near the throttle body if it is loose that will affect the info being sent to the idle control motor

Re: Throttle sometimes sticks with bumps? WHY

Check you motor mounts and tranny mount. I broke a tranny mount and when I hit a bump (boulder) just right it makes the engine sway and pulls the accelerator cable. Sometimes when I hit the clutch it moves back.

Good luck!

Re: Throttle sometimes sticks with bumps? WHY

Some engines have an emission control device that holds engine speed at a high idle for a while and then slowly lets it down. On carburetors it's usually a diaphragm with a pinhole to let air out slowly. On newer systems it's handled with a stepper motor or solenoid.

I don't know much about new Jeeps, so I don't know if yours even has such a device, but if it does that could be causing your problems.
