Gears Carriers Axles.......Dana 30/44

I have a Dana 30 front axle that, well lets just say the carrier and spiders are shot.

1. Will a HP Dana 30 open carrier with spider gears out of a YJ fit in my stock 75 CJ narrow track Dana 30. Both have/had 3.73 ring and pinion.

2. Would any Dana 30 carrier and spiders fit? Are there differences?

3. Is there an upgrade to a 44 front that will give me 5 on 5.5 and narrow track and 3.73 gears to match the rear 44.

3a. Can I shorten a Chevy 44 front and get that?

3b. Can I use the outer axle shafts, spindle, wheel bearing hub, and locking hub from my Dana 30 in a waggy 44. Is this even an upgrade? What gearing did the waggys come with? Is the width the same as my narrow track 44 rear?

Any ideas on what I should do?

Ya, sounds like you need to stop veiwing the sky thru the windshield... Did we break something at Monteagle??????

as for the questions.... hhhmmmmmm?

1. From what I understand.... yes, but don't quote me. of course you'll need your own R&P since the HP D30 will be reverse cut.

2.Based on What I've heard that's where I was getting the answer for #1.....

3. Not that i recall off the top of my head.... but you can pick up a 44 out of a Ford 4WD truck and have it cut down... but I would go wider axles front and rear before doing that.

3a.uuuuuuH, you can shorten the Chevy 44, but I'm not sure about lug pattern, have to wwait for someone else to answer that.

3b... Uh, couldn't tell you on some of that, but I wouldn't consider it much of an upgrade, no the widths would be wider on the Waggy axles.. even so with Narrow Waggy axles...

4. What I'd do:
a: find another D30 Narrow trac front and straight swap everything.
or
b. Find Waggy and/or Scout axles and swap them over. you'll benefit from wider axles, and be able to swap your gears& Locker for the rear over to the wider axles.

Any pics from Monteagle?????

No, we got drunk at camp and welded the spiders to the carrier. Now I can't steer, even w/ one hub unlocked (either one) it only goes to the left about half way but all the way if I unlock them both. It's got to be fixed, either hydro assist on a 30 (what a joke that would be), new carrier, or new axle(s). Don't have much in the budget right now.

I haven't checked my camera yet, but I don't think I took many pic's.

If the HP D30 carrier and spiders will fit...I've got them, the carrier has the 3.07 gear on it now...

I can make them fit your budget.

Thanks for being a guinea pig I've always wondered how a lincoln locker would work on the front. I knew steering would be affected but just didn't know how much and was always to chicken to try it. So if it makes you feel any better you saved me from learning the hard way

If you just welded gears to the case couldn't you just use a cut off tool and cut them out and grind the welds smooth. Then reuse or replace the spider gears? I may even have some used spiders you can have for just the shipping. Let me know and I'll see what I have but I know the carrier and pin are shot.

Can't wait to hear this story on Paltalk

Re: Gears Carriers Axles.......Dana 30/44

Aaron, just got this from a local smart guy:
---------------------
Your carrier would work if he was running 3.54 and higher gears.
Since he is running 3.73 he CAN use one from a CJ/YJ/TJ/XJ/ZJ but it
has to be from a vehicle with 3.73 and lower gears.
-----------------------

so if you need them, I've got the carrier and spiders.

Re: Gears Carriers Axles.......Dana 30/44

Sorry, all I saw was "Your carrier would work"...not the "if" part. But as it turns out, I have a set of 4.10's sitting here with the carrier attatched... so yup, I've got the carrier for you.

To further explain...as I see it from my email. All Jeep D30 carriers will work, no mater if they came from a HP or not. You just have to get the carrier matching your gears, same as usual, 3.54 is the break point.

Re: Gears Carriers Axles.......Dana 30/44

Ive got a set of dana 44 axles from a 77 Scout II with 3.73 gears and detroit lockers front and rear, both axles have been rebuilt and are 5/ 5.5 bolt pattern. They both have 0 miles on them since the rebuild, and the caster has been adjusted for 6 degrees + castor. I started on this thing about 3 years ago and I havent been able to finish it so Im thinking about parting it out. If your interested just let me know, If you need to know anymore, just ask Pat, he helped me do the build up on it.
