yj restarts hard-except if jumped

My 89 is driving me crazy, its got the gutless 4cyl, 5 speed and after wheeling it I can't get it to restart if I shut it off. It will start if my friend pulls it and I put it in gear to jump it, my starter is turning it over good too! I would think if any water is is causing it then why would jump starting it work better? I did silicone the d-cap and air filter thing on the carb since the o-ring gasket wasn't working to good. Any possible solution that i've overseen? My plug wires haven't been dioelectric siliconed yet...

Re: yj restarts hard-except if jumped

Sounds like somethin's gotta be getting wet. I would go ahead and put dielectric grease on the plug wires, and any other connections related to your ing, system that could or do get wet. Is your air filter getting wet at all. Got a couple of buddies that have 4 cylinders and take on water at times. They seem to really run and start bad if the element gets soaked. These guys just take the filter element out if this happens, not the best for engine though. Might try to snorkel the air inlet if you like getting your Jeep wet.

Re: yj restarts hard-except if jumped

That was one problem so I drilled a 3" hole thru my firewall and used a shopvac hose from the carb to under my dash with a walmart bought cone airfilter duct taped on. The strange thing is it still starts easier on a jump, maybe starter isn't turning fast enough?

Re: yj restarts hard-except if jumped

My guesses are:
1)wet wires/starter motor
2)bad ground
3)bad battery

I think the coil is bad. Getting hot braking down and not sparking. The starter motor is using most of the battery power. Thats why jumping it or pulling it gets it started.
