CJ7 Starting Problem

I was trying to help a friend get his 83CJ7 running today with no luck...Here is the deal:

When the key is in the start posistion the engine will start and run but when you release it to the run posistion it turns off. We tried a new ignition module and switch. Anyone have any sugestions?

Thanks,
Mike

Re: CJ7 Starting Problem

The only thing that comes to mind is that there is a problem between the lock and the switch itself. There is a rod with a hook on the end that goes down from the lock to the switch and that toggles the off/run/start setting. If that linkage is not set right, then the switch could return to the off position without you turning off the key. I suggest that you check the linkage and perhaps try the operation of the switch without the linkage connected.

Re: CJ7 Starting Problem

I had the same problem. I had lost my 12v to the coil when the key was in the run position. I traced it back to a rotted connector in the junction block at the firewall. I wound up throwing a toggle switch and relay in to control power to the module and coil until I can get a new harness to swap in (this fall).
