YJ hard Brake pedal

Once in a while, My 87 YJ brake pedal will feel hard as a rock then I hear a pop, then the pedal feels normal again.
Take note, that when it is hard, it still slows the Jeep down but not as fast and it is not pulling.
Possible master cyl? Brake booster?
Any Ideas?

Re: YJ hard Brake pedal

Brake booster...check it out...You said that it stops ok during the problem, then it is hard pedal, then back to normal. Must be a booster going bad, or leaking vacuum lines...
Check for leaks at all wheels, and master cylinder.

Ditto on the booster. Check it first. I don't know what the "pop" sound is.

Is the pedal binding?

I will recheck all the fittings and wheel cyls, calipers ect for leaks.... Whould the proportioning valve do something like this? The pedal doesn't bind.

Re: YJ hard Brake pedal

I can get it to happen EVERY time I panic stop now! HORRAY!!!! If I press the pedal down normal it stops perfect. If I step on it fast. Pedal is hard, Jeep slows down, Then I let up on the pedal and press it down again, a slight pop is heard, then the Jeep tires will lock up. I am going to try and locate a Brake booster. Any Idea on if they sell them aftermarket?
My thought on Junkyard parts is that it's probably as good as the one in the Jeep now.

Re: YJ hard Brake pedal

I just got done replacing my brake booster ($78.00) and master cyl ($64.00). The booter is a rebuilt unit. The master cyl is a new unit. The new master cyl is made out of cast iron. The original one is aluminum. I checked out a remanufatured Master cyl but got discouraged when the casting looked worse then mine. The brakes never felt SOOOOO Good.
