Buying an Alternator for a 95 YJ

I need to replace my alternator because it is overcharging the system. Went out looking for a new one at the local shops - all i could find were remnft. ones for... $160.
Is that what they go for? I can't find any new ones out there to compare it to for cost. Should I rebuild it? I have never rebuilt one before.

the 95 alt. is a Mistubushi made unit - chrysler does this on purpose to make it hard right?

Re: Buying an Alternator for a 95 YJ

well dont do that and pay $160 thats nuts! if u have a junk yard around, go there and get one for a 97-2000 i think, im not sure if they changed them after 2000 but in 1997 the offered 117amp in the wrangler and 136 amp in the grand cherokees that will fit your 95 YJ, 4 or 6 cylinder it doesnt matter, just not sure what year they went up too, whether its 2000 or 2001 or maybe they stil use the same type, but anyone i had a 90 amp in my 95 YJ and got 117 amp one from a 97 cherokee and it worked fine, but at my junk yard for 10 bucks more u get a life time replacement, u still get a junkyard part, but they replace it with another junkyard alternator for life, so i payed $45 bucks and have an alternator i can keep getting new ones for life, the alternator i put on it has lasted over 2 years and havent any any problems with it, you should check it out... itll save u some cash, or check on ebay under "powermaster" i think u can get 160amp for around 100 bucks or so i think, ask h8monday i think he used to use those .. i think later... wow i wrote alot i hope it makes sense ! good luck! Re: Buying an Alternator for a 95 YJ

I got a 135a for 85.99 including shipping. Trying to find the site now where I ordered it. http://4alterstart.com/ I had to opent the case and turn the front 90deg, but it was well worth the price. If you do this, upgrade the wiring at the same time. I went with a 150a self-resetting circuit breaker instead of a fusible link.
