Noise from timing cover

Started the fresh motor for the first time!!! Frame off has had it's ups and downs, but getting close to road/trail ready. Then 5 min. into the warm-up I hear a tapping in the timing cover. Well thats my best guess based on the sound and location. The motor was primed and chain was tight. Any ideas or what to look for when I pull the thing apart?

Is the project of a Jeep ever done??

Re: Noise from timing cover

Could it be the fuel pump? There is a noise, sounds more like a clunk than a click, that comes and goes around the front of my 78K mile 258. I think it's the fuel pump lever because I just installed a new chain and sprockets and it didn't change the sound. I don't worry about it any more.

Re: Noise from timing cover

I had a similar problem a while back. I found that the harmonic balancer was sitting a little too close to the cover and that's what was making the tap. If you pull the balancer and see slight rubbing or scoring on the cover then that's probably your answer. Whenever I would torque to specification I would repeat the problem so I ground a washer slightly until it acted as a shim between the nut and the crank(cam?) shaft. Worked great.

Re: Noise from timing cover

Hey, i am just gonna throw my 2 cents in here..................I had a problem last month and I swore up and down it was coming from my timing case, I tore it apart so many times, I replaced it and the tensioner, it ended up being the water pump baring, sounded just like a tapping on the t case cover, kinda like and sprey paint can......................might not be ur problem but I just had to throw out somthing
