steering column length? CJ.

Hey all,

I am starting to build my steering column. Its a 3/4" sold steel shaft with a disconnect at the wheel and at the other end I have the end of a stock steering column which is 3/4 OD. I am going to slide it on the shaft and weld it. The stock steering shaft will then be used.

The dash has a heim type unit bolted to it and I built a plate to bolt to the firewall with the same type of heim joint(these are made for race car steering columns)

To keep the steering column from sliding in/out, I have the 3/4 collars that bolt on the shaft.

I need some measurements.... How far out does the stock column stick out in the engine area? From the firewall to the end of the shaft going into the steering shaft u joint.

I also need an idea of how from from the dash to the steering wheel...

THANKS!

Re: steering column length? CJ.

On my '78 there's 5 1/2" from the firewall to the end of the spline. There's 10 1/4" from the dash to the end of the the steering column. Then about 3/16" gap to the base of the steering wheel hub. The steering shaft is about 29" from U-joint center to center.

As you are doing, I used the stock steering shaft so that it would collapse in a crash, but also incorporated a U-joint slip yoke to handle minor changes in the firewall-to-steering box distance. That changes about 3/16" as the body and frame flex, and I expect will change more as the body mounts sag.
